Obituary

Mary B. McDowell-Lantz Whitfield, 98, of Camden, passed away at her home this morning, Tuesday-December 19, 2023, at 12:22am, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on October 23, 1925, in Camden. Her parents preceded her in death. She was raised by her foster parents William & Mary Ella Lantz, who preceded her in death. Her marriage was to Frank J. Whitfield, at the First Baptist Church in Camden, on September 6, 1958, and he preceded her in death on January 29, 2008. Mary graduated from Camden High School in 1944. She formerly worked at Peters-Revington Furniture Factory in Delphi, then for several years at the Camden Elementary School in the cafeteria and cleaned the school as well. She also cleaned the office building for Select Seeds in Camden and wrote a weekly column for the Carroll County Comet, about what was going on in Camden. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Camden. The Aim High Home Ec Club, and the Camden Lions Club. She loved people and enjoyed talking to her many neighbors and friends in her community. A quick trip to the store to get milk always turned into an hour's long trip, because she would surely see someone she knew and to know what was going on in their life. She truly cared. She loved to cook and bake and can vegetables and other garden items. She loved taking short trips with her family, especially to Kings Island or a longer trip to Florida. Mary's greatest joy was her family. She dearly loved them all and enjoyed being together for any occasion. They were her life. Surviving: daughter-Mary Stilson of West Lafayette, son-Everett G. Whitfield Sr of Holt Summit, MO, son-John & Karen Whitfield of Bringhurst, son-Frank Whitfield of Camden. 8 grandchildren, & 17 great grandchildren survive. She was preceded in death by a son Mark, an infant grandson & great grandson, a son-in-law Bob, a daughter-in-law Shanell, 2 brothers Forrest & Jesse. Services: Visitation will be Friday the 22nd from 4pm to 7pm at Abbott Funeral Home, Inc., Delphi. Her funeral service will be Saturday the 23rd, at 11am, at the First Baptist Church in Camden, Pastor Paul Veldhuizen officiating. Burial will follow at Camden Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Camden Lions Club or the First Baptist Church of Camden. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
