Louis G. Capper, 79, of rural Brookston, passed away at his home on Thursday-June 25, 2026, at 5:29pm, after a brave battle and complications from dementia. Louis was born on January 19, 1947, in Lafayette, to the late Thomas & Golda Oilar Capper. His marriage was to Janet L. Matthews on August 11, 1968, at the Federated Church in Brookston, and she survives. He was a 1965 graduate of Brookston High School, and was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving for 4 years as a draftsman, rank Spec 5, received the Army Commendation Medal and was honorably discharged. He was very active with the Brookston American Legion Post #251, proudly participating in the honor guard for many years. He first worked for Peerless Wire in Lafayette, then for Chesters Fertilizer in Brookston, and lastly at Tate & Lyle S. Plant for 17 years and was a leader for their hazmat emergency response team and a union rep. He was a member of the Federated Church in Brookston, was on their church board, and was treasurer of the church for many years. He was a member of the Brookston Lions Club, was on the Brookston Library board, helped deliver meals on wheels, and was a Franciscan Hospital red coat volunteer. He was an avid reader and history buff. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce that came from it with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, music, fishing, watching the deer, turkeys and birds around his property, and tinkering around in his barn. He enjoyed the White Sox, Purdue University sports and collecting license plates. His greatest love was for his family. He enjoyed all the time they would spend together at his home for any occasion. Surviving: wife-Janet L. Capper of Brookston, daughter-Melissa & Phillip Kaldahl of Brownsburg, daughter-Andrea & Kenny Crawford of Brownsburg, daughter-Sandy & Brent Culver of Lafayette, sister-Theresa & Pab Caudillo of Brookston, 3 granddaughters & 3 grandsons survive. Preceded in death by 3 brothers & 3 sisters. Services: His visitation will be Wednesday-July 1, 2026, from 11am until his funeral service at 1pm at the Federated Church in Brookston. Rev. Dr. Leland McReynolds & Pastor Nicholas Kaldahl officiating. Entombment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette, with Brookston American Legion providing Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookston Prairie Township Public Library, PO Box 528, Brookston, IN 47923 or to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, include IN-Brookston on the memo line, payable to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, mail to SHP IN-Brookston, 300 E. 3rd St. Brookston, IN 47923.
