Lola E. "Betty" Van Pelt O'Brien, 91, formerly of Carroll County, died Sunday-Apr 16, 2017 at 12:42pm, at St. Anthony Healthcare Center, Lafayette. She had been a resident there for 5 years. She was born Dec 24, 1925 in Concan, TX, to the late Clarence & Margaret Coleman Van Pelt. Her marriage was to Lawrence W. O'Brien in Riverside, CA, on Dec 10, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Feb 22, 2006. She graduated from Uvalde High School in Texas, 1942. She received her B.S. from the University of Texas, and her M.A. from the University of Maryland in Military Science. During WW II, she was the personal secretary for Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold (5 Star General) Chief of the Army Air Corps, working at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., on the B-29 project. She also worked with Gen. Douglas McArthur while at the Pentagon. During her employment at the Pentagon, she met President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was family friends with Vice President John Garner, and Lt. Col. James H. "Tommy" Doolittle. She and her husband owned and operated Lawrence & Associates, and employment agency from 1967-1985, and she helped her husband on their farm. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic church, Delphi. She enjoyed bowling, and was on several women's leagues, golfing, was a member of the Carroll Co. Country Club and Angel Hill Country Club. She was an avid BINGO player, and always sported the latest fashion's and styles, always dressed to the T. Surviving: Daughters-Kellye & Milton Lewis of Lafayette, Keyia Pearson of Ockley; son-Peter L. O'Brien of Bringhurst; sister-Emily Wegner of San Antonio, TX; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by 2 brother's. Friends may call Thursday from 5-8pm at Abbott Funeral Home Inc., Delphi, with scripture service at 4:30pm. Funeral mass Friday at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi, Fr. Robert Williams officiating. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Delphi.
