Obituary

John Lee Richter, age 82, died unexpectedly in his home on September 3, 2025, in Camden, Indiana. John is survived by daughters: Beth (Tim) Canen, of Camden, and Beverly Bowen, of Marion; grandchildren: Cody (Michelle) Canen, of Lafayette, Ali Canen, of Camden, Chad Canen (Kiley Haygood), of Camden, and Jarrett Bowen (fiancée Rylee Ellett), of Arizona; great-grandchildren: Owen and Josie Canen, of Lafayette; sisters: Marilyn Layman, of Georgia, and Janis (George) Hanaway, of Camden; and grand-dog: Gus. John was born on July 18, 1943, in Camden, Indiana, to parents Fred and Marie Richter. He was baptized at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Camden and attended there as a child. He graduated from Camden High School in 1962. He was a part of the Army Reserves for 6 years. He farmed and was a bus driver for the Delphi Community School Corporation for 38 years, retiring in 2023. He was a life-long Camden resident. He enjoyed fishing and hosted many fish fry's for friends and family over the years. He loved playing games and wanted those closest to him to recognize his "greatness" at euchre. He looked forward to euchre tournaments and treasured his Thursday night euchre games with friends. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting, cooking, and watching Survivor. He loved learning about history and historical events. A private graveside service will be held on Friday, September 26. All are welcome to attend his Celebration of Life later that day at the Camden Community Building from 4:00pm-6:00pm. John deeply cared for the well-being of the children on his bus routes and never wanted to see a child standing out in the cold. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to bring coats to his Celebration of Life to benefit local children in need.
