H. Larry Welborn, 87, of Delphi, passed away Thursday-December 26, 2024, at 2:35am, at Mulberry Healthcare Center. Larry was born July 27, 1937, in Elwood, to the late Herschel & Mary Foust Welborn. Larry married Carolyn J. LePage in Pyrmont, on December 31, 1967, and she survives. Larry graduated from Frankton High School in 1955. Received his BS in Ag education in 1959, and his MA in Ag education in 1961, both from Purdue University, West Lafayette. He also was in the ROTC at Purdue, U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and was in the U.S. Army reserves stationed in Kokomo, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant, being honorably discharged in May of 1967. His first job was teaching ag education at Ingalls, IN, middle school from 1962 to 1963. Larry then worked for 36 years for the USDA Soil Conservation Service and Natural Resources and Conservation Service for Cass & Carroll Counties, retiring on December 31, 1999. Larry was an active member of the Delphi Methodist Church. Serving as head usher for many years, was on the PPR and Ad Council boards, was Sunday school superintendent, and belonged to the Wesley Wed Sunday School class. Larry was very active with the Delphi Lions Club, serving 50 years as a member and as a past president. He helped with the blood mobile and was a 13-gallon donor, was on the highway clean up committee, was named Lion of the Year, received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, the Lions Distinguished Service Award, belonged to the Soil Conservation Society of Indiana, in 2000 was inducted into the Carroll County Agriculture Hall of Fame, received the Distinguished Hoosier Award, and in 2007 was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana. He also was a 50-year member of the Frankton Masonic Lodge. Larry enjoyed gardening, farming, and outdoor activities. Keeping his yard mowed just right and enjoyed trimming trees and manicuring his landscape. He enjoyed tinkering and fixing things. He loved to engineer something that would help him around his home, like his homemade snowplow. He enjoyed Purdue sports. Most of all Larry enjoyed his family. He dearly loved them all, and when his grandchildren would come to visit, he enjoyed taking them on rides in his trailer behind his garden tractor. He loved to be together as a family, sharing a meal, laughing and having great conversation around his dining room table. They were his life. He dearly loved his Lord and Savior and was a testament to his faith that he passed on to his family. Surviving: wife-Carolyn J. Welborn of Delphi, daughter-Susan & Michael Firsich of Indianapolis, son-Thomas & Kelly Welborn of Lafayette, sister-Linda & Steven Blake of Davis, CA, 4 grandchildren survive. Preceded in death by a sister Sharon, and an infant brother Hal. Services: Visitation will be Monday from 10:00am until his funeral service at 12:00pm at the Delphi Methodist Church, Rev. Todd Ladd officiating. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery, Delphi. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delphi Methodist Church Prayer Garden, envelopes available at the church.
