Obituary

On Tuesday, November 23, 2021 Elsie (El) I. Quesenbery, wife, mother, and grandmother, and sister slipped away to her heavenly home at the age of 88. She was born August 17, 1933 in Monroe, Michigan to Ross and Lula Hill. El was an avid reader of books with a wide range of topics, often reading 3 or 4 books a week. Throughout her life, El traveled extensively with a beach being a favorite destination. Her last major trip a few years ago was to St. George Island. Flower gardening, particularly roses, was a favorite hobby. She loved animals, often putting out food for stray cats. A visiting grand dog always had a bowl of green beans waiting upon arrival at her house. Other pastimes were watching NFL football, always rooting against the Patriots, watching her bird feeders with an identification book close at hand, and as she said "working her brain" with crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was making a home for her family. She would take her four kids as they  were growing up on adventures like picnics and plays at Columbian Park and swimming in country creeks, and camping.  She delighted in creating memories for her grandchildren, always meeting them at their level. They loved her dearly. She would find exactly the right grapevine in the woods for a swing, scramble eggs (on Thanksgiving!) for a grandson's discerning palate. She read bedtime stories, kept a toy closet and baked dozens of chocolate chip cookies and chocolate birthday cakes.  Memories of annual Christmases at Grandma's will be one of her legacies. El was a woman of spirit, wit, and determination. She loved adventure, whether it was riding the San Francisco cable cars while hanging out the window to feel the wind, shooting an AR15 or rushing through an airport on her two new artificial knees. Survivors include her husband of 69 years Jim, daughters Libby Bauer (Dave) of Hayward, WI. Sharon Quesenbery of Lafayette, Jan Sloan (Paul) of West Lafayette, and son Jim (Dianne) of Delphi. Her grandchildren are Sarah, Ben, Daniel, Jake (Allison), and Katie and great grandchildren Halle, Wyatt, Ryan, and Reagan. El is also survived by a brother Clarence B. Hill of Monroe, MI, sister Shirley Seago of Cameron NC, sister-in-law, Eileen Crockett of Monroe, MI and several nieces and nephews. Preceding El in death were her parents, brothers Clyde, Otto, Earl, and Ted, sisters Henrietta and WIlma, and a beloved dog, Max. El loved and appreciated her church and was a member of the Delphi Wesleyan Church. A private family memorial service with family and friends was held Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at the church. Pastor Dan Fisher and Dave Bauer, son-in-law, officiated. "El", "Mom" and "Grandma" will be greatly missed. Her indomitable spirit will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved her. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Delphi Wesleyan Church or the Delphi Public Library. Abbott Funeral Home, Inc., Delphi, is assisting the family with arrangements. www.abbottfuneralhome.com
