Elonia Jean Gross Shay, 70, of Lafayette, died Tuesday-May 23, 2017 at 10:34am at her home. She was born Sept 24, 1946 in Peru, IN, to the late Jessie & ILa Mae Sparks Gross. Her marriage was to Leslie David Shay on Oct 17, 1965 in Peru, and he preceded her in death on Nov 13, 2013. She was a 1965 graduate of Maconaquah High School, Bunker Hill. She had worked at various restaurants and other retail stores in Delphi, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, baking and canning, and was known for her cinnamon rolls & pies. She always took baked goods to the Carroll County Sheriffs Department during the holidays, in tribute to their efforts keeping us safe. She enjoyed talking on her CB radio, and her handle was "Tall Red". She was instrumental in getting the DCSC CB radios for all of their buses, holding bake sales and other fundraisers to help offset the cost. She would monitor the bus radio traffic every morning and afternoon during school. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed going to garage sales. Surviving: daughters-Lori & Art Weimer of West Lafayette, Angie Y. Shay of Lafayette; son-Leslie & Lisa Shay of Delphi; sister-Pauline Smith of Sumpter, SC; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren.
