Carl "Dean" Overholser, 96, of Delphi, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on February 22, 2025. Dean was born March 20, 1928, to Carl C and Bethel Victoria (Gee) Overholser at home near Cutler, Indiana. On August 8, 1951, he married the love of his life, Donna Elizabeth Kingery, who proceeded him in death in 2018 after 66 years of marriage.
Dean was a man whose faith in Jesus Christ guided every aspect of his life. He believed every day was a gift from God demonstrating kindness, patience, and grace to all who knew him. While in high school, he was President of Christian Crusaders, a youth group of 150 teenagers. He joined the Delphi Methodist Church in 1955 and was a founding member of the Wesley Weds Class. He served in various roles in the church including lay leader, trustee, Bertha Mears Endowment and Sunday School teacher.
Dean attended Cutler School and graduated from Carrollton High School in May 1946. He then attended Indiana University and was a founding member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity in Bloomington. While in undergraduate studies he was enrolled in ROTC. In 1950, he graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor's Degree in Government. He entered Indiana University School of Law in 1950. In April 1951, he was called to serve in the Army as an officer in the Quartermaster Corps at Fort Benning Georgia during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Indiana University in Fall of 1953 and graduated from IU School of Law in 1955.
As a child, he went with his father to see George Obear, Attorney at Law. This inspired him to go to law school and join the Obear and Obear Law Firm in 1955, becoming partner in 1957. He and the Obear's were committed to providing the community with servant leadership demonstrating fair, honest, and unwavering ethical standards. Dean was a member of the American, Indiana, & Carroll County Bar Associations. Dean's many roles as Attorney included founding president and attorney for the Wabash & Erie Canal Association, Delphi City Attorney, Carroll County Prosecutor, and Board of Directors at First Federal Savings & Loan.
Dean found great joy in serving his church and his community. He believed that his faith was meant to be lived out through his contribution to the community by being a 50-Year member of both Delphi Rotary and Mount Zion Masonic Lodge. Dean was the administratior of the DMC Memorial Fund, Administrative Council, and a board member of Purdue-North Central Nursing Clinics. His contributions were recognized in 2004, when he was honored with the Samuel Milroy Award.
Dean and Donna supported and participated in many community events, annual Methodist Chicken BBQ, Rotary Pancake Day, Carroll Manor, Meals on Wheels, among others.
Dean found great pleasure working in his yard. He enjoyed sharing his life experiences and would often add some light-hearted humor. Some of Dean's favorite pastimes were watching the St. Louis Cardinals major league baseball team. rooting on the Indiana Hoosiers basketball team and reminiscing about his basketball playing days in high school. Most of all, Dean thoroughly cherished spending time with his beloved family.
Dean is survived by his four children, Martin Dean Overholser (Sandra), Gail Ann Overholser, Vicky Fern Snipes-Sorrells (Lon), Susan Jane Fisher (Tim). Also survived by 11 grandchildren: Megan Bucur, Aimee O'Connor (Rusty), Adam Snipes (Juli), Carly Eastin (Travis), Tony Fisher, Matt Fisher, Lindsay Roden (Connor), and Ryan Fisher, Jesse Sorrells ( Heather), Desiree Young (Matt), Josh Sorrells (Heather). Along with18 great-grandchildren. Also survived by several nephews and special friend Dale Snipes.
Along with his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, sister Berenice Miller, (Ray), brothers Robert Overholser (Phyllis), Max Overholser (Doris), Benny Jo Overholser and a niece. Also, in-laws Chris and Roxie Crispen, Lee and Hazel Flora.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dean's honor to the Delphi Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Visitation will be Wednesday the 26th from 4pm to 7pm at the Delphi Methodist Church, 1796 N. US 421, Delphi, IN 46923. His funeral service will be there on Thursday the 27th, at 11:00am, Rev. Todd Ladd officiating. The burial will take place at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora, with the Carroll County Honor Guard providing Military Honor's.
