Adelene May Gillam Smith, 97, formerly of Carroll County, died at 2:50am Monday-May 24, 2021, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH, following a stroke. She was born October 1, 1923 in Radnor, IN, to the late Vernon Roscoe & Gladys Prayerbook Clawson Gillam. A graduate of Kokomo High School and Cleveland Bible College (now Malone University), she married Roy Jacob Smith February 26, 1956 at West Park Friends Church in Cleveland, OH; he preceded her in death on February 15, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother William "Bill" Charles Gillam.
She is survived by her daughters, Diane & Mike Hochstetler of Millersburg, OH, and LaVerne & Garry Marion of Wabash. 6 grandchildren survive: Caleb Marion of Tacoma, WA, Rebecca Wright of Wabash, Hannah & Seth Rader of Walkersville, WV, Sarah Hochstetler, Joanna & Matthew Meek, and Joshua Hochstetler all of Millersburg, OH. 12 great grandchildren: Alexis, Treyton, and Marlie Wright of Wabash, Samuel, Shadrach, Reuben, Cyrus, and Trudence Rader of Walkersville, WV, Jena, MaKayla, Annalise, and Steven Meek of Millersburg, OH; niece Cindy & Steve Good of Avon, nephews Jeff & Sandra Gillam of Evans, GA, and Dave & Mary Jo Gillam of Conroe, TX.
Adelene was a descendant of Jonathan Gillam, one of Carroll County's first settlers, a member of the Radnor United Methodist Church and the Frances Slocum Chapter of the DAR. Adelene was an accomplished musician as a vocalist, violinist, and Appalachian Dulcimerist, and a life-long student and teacher of the Bible.
Visitation will be from 12pm until her funeral service at 2pm on Thursday-June 3, 2021, at the Radnor United Methodist Church. David Benedict officiating, burial at Zion Citizens Cemetery, rural Carroll County. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, envelopes will be available at her service.
